The University of Alberta, known for its strong position as one of the top five universities in Canada and its ranking among the top 100 Universities worldwide, offers a wide range of scholarship opportunities to support students from diverse backgrounds.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Alberta can take advantage of various scholarships, some of which may even cover living expenses. One notable feature of the university’s scholarship program is that it includes automatic scholarships. This means that students do not always have to apply separately for these scholarships, as they will be considered automatically when they are admitted.

The scholarships offered by the University of Alberta are diverse and cater to different types of students.

One significant offering is the research allowance, which provides financial support for students’ professional development and travel related to their educational research. This feature sets the University of Alberta apart from other Canadian Universities that provide scholarships to international students.

To be eligible for these scholarships, students must be pursuing a Doctorate degree at the University of Alberta. The availability of a student stipend depends on the funding limitations of their educational program, particularly for students whose research opportunities are restricted due to financial constraints.

The selection process for scholarships at the University of Alberta is based on the research specialties of the applicants. Those whose research focuses on public benefits and development have a higher likelihood of being selected.

The selection criteria primarily consider the research proposed by the applicant, including the methodology, significance, planned actions, and goals. Interested students are required to submit a Fellowship Application Form, a Letter of Support, a Canadian Common CV, and details of their proposed research work.

Upon completion of the funding year, successful applicants are expected to provide a thesis summarizing their research work. These theses are then presented at the Ph.Ds Go Public networking event.

The University of Alberta administers grants, advances, bursaries, and crises funds totaling over $30 million through the office of the Registrar.

Additionally, there are other grants funded by external bodies. Some of the notable grants include the Academic Rhodes Scholarship, Convocation Honors, Jason Lang Scholarship, Sandy Mactaggart Award, Leadership grants, Medical Research Awards, and the McKinney Post-secondary Scholarship.

International students at the University of Alberta are also eligible for special scholarships, financial grants, and awards. These are typically funded by the Government of Alberta, the Canadian government, and various non-governmental organizations.

Some prominent examples include the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Killam Trust Scholarship, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships, Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) awards.
